CUP, SPECIMEN (Sterile and Nonsterile)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description describes a specimen container with metal and plastic lids, used for the collection of urine specimens.
Salient characteristics. Size-A – the primary container shall be round, disposable, translucent, plastic polypropylene. The lid shall provide a leakproof seal when tested as follows: the cup shall be filled with 4 oz. (118 ml.) of water. With the lid placed firmly on the container, the container shall be held upside down and placed on its side on a flat surface for 5 minutes. Any evidence of leakage will constitute failure. The container shall be stable on a flat surface, and shall be free from objectionable odor, sharp edges, deformations, cracks, burrs, holes, or thin areas. There shall be an equal number of cups and caps and (labels if applicable) per case. These specimen cups shall be of the following sizes, types and styles, as specified.
Style I – With plastic lid.
Type I – Nonsterile, 4 to 4-1/4 oz. (118 to 133 ml) capacity, with graduation of oz. and ml/cc in 1/4 oz. (7ml.) and 10 ml/cc increments molded into the container. White lid (not translucent), the lid shall have provisions for patient identification, either a label or white-on surface, that accepts, at a minimum, the patient’s name and room number. The container shall be deigned to nest, not to exceed 25 per tube or sleeve. Packed to remain clean until time of use.
