Sampling for examination. Sampling for examination shall be conducted in accordance with MIL-STD-105, with an AQL of 2.5 (percent defective) and an inspection level of II. The unit of product for examination purposes shall be one roll of sterilization sealing tape.
Sampling for tests. Sampling for tests including dimensional test, shall be conducted in accordance with MIL-STD-105, with an AQL of 4.0 (percent defective) and inspection level of S-2. The unit of product for test purposes shall be one roll of tape.
Test specimens. Three specimens for each test shall be taken from each sample roll. The first three laps of tape shall be removed and specimens for testing shall then be taken from the beginning and two other areas near the end and near the midpoint of the roll. The average of the three values obtained for each test on each roll shall be used to determine compliance with requirements.
Test conditioning. The tape shall be conditioned for not less than 24 hours at 73°F ± 3.5°F and 48 percent minimum relative humidity, and shall be tested under these conditions.
Tests. Tests shall be conducted to determine compliance with specification requirements. Where feasible, the same sample shall be used for the determination of two or more test characteristics. Tests shall include but shall not be limited to the following:
Tensile breaking strength, wet. Samples of tape, 11 inches in length, shall be immersed in boiling water 5 minutes and then immediately, transferred to a container of water at 73°F ± 3.5°F, where they shall remain until tested. Testing shall be completed within 10 minutes. The sample to be tested shall be removed from the water and placed, adhesive side up, on paper toweling for not more than 5 seconds, the absorb excess water. The breaking strength shall be no less than 4.5 pounds per inch width.
Tensile breaking strength, dry. The procedure for testing breaking strength of dry tape shall be as described in ASTM Method No. D3759. The breaking strength shall be no less than 16 pounds per inch width.
Ultimate elongation, dry. The procedure for testing ultimate elongation of dry tape shall be as described in ASTM D3759. The elongation shall be no less than 5 percent.
Thickness test. The thickness of the tape shall be determined in accordance with ASTM Method No. D3652. Maximum value shall be 0.008 inches.
