COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
CASE, BONE NAIL AND INSTRUMENT STERILIZATION
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description.
This Commercial Item Description covers a bone nail and instrument sterilization case.
Salient characteristics:
The bone nail and instrument sterilization case shall be a lightweight Dacron envelope-like case with individual pockets for use in protecting four Kuntscher intramedullary nails and four instruments, used to impact or extract Kuntscher nails, during steam or ethylene oxide sterilization procedures. The case shall be approximately 20 inches by 15 inches while lying open and flat. The case shall be sewed into eight separate compartments for nail and tool separation.
The case shall allow adequate steam or ethylene oxide penetration and circulation during sterilization and shall be able to withstand multiple sterilizations. The case shall have two ties, each approximately 12 inches long, for securing the instruments inside after the case is rolled up. The case shall be supple, washable, resistant to staining, and resistant to cracking after repeated flexing. The stitching shall not damage the material. all seams shall be tightly secured with no openings.
The case shall have no cuts, holes, thin spots, or abraded areas. The case shall have no repairs or patches. The case shall be free of grease, oil stains, or embedded foreign material.
NOTE: The case is to be used as an inner wrap to separate and protect the bone nails and instruments from damage during handling and sterilization. In order to maintain the sterility required for surgical insertion, the case shall be wrapped in some type of wrapper, envelope, or other standard method for sterilization to allow maintenance of sterility and to be able to present the item on a sterile field.
