JAR, SURGICAL NEEDLE
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description in preference to Federal Specification RR-J-170.
This commercial item description covers a corrosion-resisting steel jar and cover designed to hold sterile hypodermic needles, alcohol sponges, cotton balls, Vaseline gauze, and safety and common pins for use in military medical treatment facilities.
Salient characteristics:
Shall be a steel jar and cover designed to hold sterile hypodermic needles, alcohol sponges, cotton balls, Vaseline gauze, and safety and common pins. The design shall facilitate easy cleaning.
Jar shall have a outside diameter of approximately 3-1/8 inches with a minimum height of 2-3/16 inches.
Jar cover shall be approximately 3/4 inch in height with either a square or rounded strap handle approximately 9/16 inch high. Finger clearance shall be adequate.
Handle shall be securely spotwelded to the cover top. Spotwelding shall be thorough, sound, and free from pits, flashes, and discoloration.
Jar and cover shall formed seamlessly from one single piece of corrosion-resisting steel, American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) 300 series, with a thickness of not less than 0.025 inch (No. 24, United States standard gage), which shall not be reduced below 0.024 inch in thickness at any point in the finished jar. Strap handle shall be a minimum of 0.031 inch in thick (No. 22, United States standard gage).
The jar shall not rock while resting on a flat surface.
Jar, cover, and handle shall be free of sharp edges, dents, cracks, tears, ripples, or deformities.
Workmanship. The surgical needle jar shall be free from defects which detract from their appearance or impair their serviceability.
Unit. Each (EA). One jar, of the size specified, constitutes one unit.
