COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
CUSHION, WHEELCHAIR SEAT
(Rubber Air Cells)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description describes air inflatable wheelchair cushions constructed of rubber cells and designed for the long term use of the wheelchair patient.
Salient characteristics. Wheelchair cushions shall be constructed of soft, flexible and interconnected rubber cells which are inflatable. This “dry floatation” shall assure evenly distributed body weight, with no peak pressures impacting on any part of the body. The cushion shall conform to the body shape. These cushions shall be compatible for use with a solid contour base commonly used to provide solid foundation to enhance positioning and stability in sling seat wheelchairs. These cushions shall be steam and ethylene oxide sterilizable.
An inflation pump, repair kit and operating instructions shall be provided with each cushion. In addition, a form-fitting cushion cover shall be provided with each cushion. The cover shall help protect the cushion surface, keep the cushion cells from protruding beyond the wheelchair seat and aid in slide transfer. The bottom of the cover design shall be made of a special non-skid material so the cushion does not slide or slip in the chair.
Single valve, single manifold style cushions shall be used to provide even pressure over the entire surface of the cushion. Dual valve, dual manifold style wheelchair cushions shall be used to achieve side-to-side or front-to-back distribution of pressure.
All measurements for cushions shown are approximate from edge to edge. Wheelchair cushions covered by this document shall be of the following sizes and styles:
