COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
WHEELCHAIR, FOLDING
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description as a replacement for VA Specification X-1529c, which is cancelled.
This commercial item description describes a wheelchair for general use by hospitalized patients and beneficiaries.
Salient characteristics: The wheelchair shall be an adult, manual, folding wheelchair with large wheels in the rear. The wheelchair shall be of tubular steel construction with chrome plated frame, flame resistant artificial leather or impregnated vinyl reinforced seat and back. The wheelchair shall be equipped with metal side panels, handbrakes on the large wheels, and wood or plastic base arm rests covered with flame resistant vinyl or shall be solid molded plastic. The seat shall be not less than 18 inches wide and not less than 16 inches deep and shall carry a 250 pound load without failure of the seat or chair. The wheelchair shall have push handles with handgrips and handrims on the rear wheels which shall have 36 spokes and be 24 inches in diameter, bicycle type. The front casters shall be free rolling, 8 inches in diameter by 1 inch, and swivel yoke mounted. Tires front and rear shall be nonmarking gray solid rubber. Footrests shall be the fold-up type, stationary in angle to the wheelchair but adjustable in length. The wheelchair shall fold and open simply and quickly in one operation. The seat, back, and armrests shall be blue.
Metric products. Products manufactured to metric dimensions will be considered on an equal basis with those manufactured using inch-pound units, providing they fall within the tolerances specified using conversion tables contained in the latest revision of Federal Standard No. 376, and all other requirements of this document are met.
If a product manufactured in metric dimensions and those dimensions exceed the tolerances specified in the inch-pound units, a request should be made to the contracting officer to determine if the product is acceptable.
The contracting officer has the option of accepting or rejecting the product.
