COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
SLING, HEAD
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description.
This Commercial Item Description covers a disposable head sling suitable for use with a spreader bar and appropriate weights to provide cervical traction for patients in transit.
Salient characteristics:
The head sling shall be universal size, readily adjustable to fit the patient. The sling shall consist of two foam pads covered with white flannel, mounted on two closed loops of rope.
A foam strip, 2-1/2 inches ± 1/8 inch wide by 11-3/8 inches ± 1/4 inch long with a nominal thickness of 1/4 inch shall be used to form each pad. The unfolded dimensions of the unfolded flannel used to cover the foam shall be 12-1/2 inches ± 1/2 inch long by 6-1/4 inches ± 1/2 inch wide.
All sides of the flannel piece shall be folded back 1/4 inch ± 1/16 inch, then wrapped around the foam pad and sealed by means of an adhesive or stitching. The ends of the flannel shall then be folded over the ends of the pad and stitched to the pad. The flannel covered pad shall then be folded back, approximately 1-1/2 inches at each end, and stitched to form a double thickness of flannel covered pad in that area. The dimensions of the finished head sling pad shall be 2-1/2 inches ± 1/8 inch wide and 7-3/4 inches ± 1/4 inch long.
Two braided closed loops of rope, a nominal 9/64 inch in rope diameter and 23 inches ± 1/2 inch in loop circumference, shall be threaded through each end loop of the head sling pad. The braided rope shall be multifilament 2520/420 denier with a minimum 340 pound breaking strength, or equal. The ends of the rope shall be closed by a plastic seal, heat seal or other suitable method.
