BAG, BIOHAZARD DISPOSAL
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description.
This Commercial Item Description covers a heavy duty plastic bag suitable for autoclaving biologically contaminated material prior to disposal in medical treatment facilities.
Salient characteristics:
The autoclavable bag shall be heavy duty, puncture resistant polypropylene, with a steam vent. The bag dimensions shall be 19 ± 2 inches wide by 23 ± 2 inches long.
The bag shall be an opaque bright orange or red in color to designate bag contents as contaminated. The coloring shall not be faded or incomplete.
The bag shall have tightly welded seams to prevent leakage of contents before and after autoclaving.
The bag shall have a minimal thickness of 0.002 inches (0.05 mm). The bag walls shall be resistant to tearing and puncturing.
The bag shall be able to withstand steam sterilization temperatures up to 285°F without softening, melting, or other degradation.
The bag shall have a variable closure which shall allow expansion and venting of steam with constriction upon cooling. A rubber band is suitable as a variable closure.
Workmanship. The biohazard disposal bag shall be free from defects which detract from its appearance or impair its serviceability.
Unit. Package (PG). One package containing 200 biohazard disposal bags, as specified, constitutes one unit.
