ENVELOPE, STERILIZATION
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description.
This Commercial Item Description covers a see-through type laminated plastic and paper surgical instrument sterilization envelope with sterilization indicators.
Salient characteristics:
The sterilization envelope shall be a continuous roll of sterilization wrap suitable for wrapping surgical instruments or other items for sterilization purposes. The envelope shall be supplied in the following approximate sizes:
Size 1 – 3 inches wide by 100 ft. long (7.6 cm by 30.5 m) roll
Size 2 – 6 inches wide by 100 ft. long (15.2 cm by 30.5 m) roll
Size 3 – 9 inches wide by 100 ft. long (22.9 cm by 30.5 m) roll
The sterilization envelope shall be composed of transparent laminated film and mylar with surgical kraft paper.
The envelope shall be suitable for steam or gas sterilization. Each sterilization envelope shall contain continuous or discontinuous, but frequently repeated, chemical indicator marks printed of the outside and inside of the envelope. These indicators shall provide visual indication that exposure to the sterilization process (steam or gas) has taken place. The steam indicator shall not change fully when exposed in the ethylene oxide process. The ethylene oxide indicator shall not change fully when exposed in the steam sterilization process.
The envelope shall be suitable for heat sealing. It shall be easy to open aseptically when it is sealed correctly.
