INDICATOR, STERILIZATION
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description covers one type of steam sterilization indicator.
Salient characteristics:
The steam sterilization indicator shall be a single use item capable of demonstrating graphically that parameters of time, temperature and saturated steam have been accomplished during steam sterilization cycles.
Results shall be readily apparent with no further processing, such as incubation after completion of the sterilization cycle.
Interpretation of results shall be determined by length rather than color of an indicator strip with a clear “reject” or “accept” indication.
Required time at temperature shall range from 21.0 minutes at 245°F to 1.4 minutes at 275°F inside a saturated steam sterilizer. The indicator shall not react within the normal range of steam sterilization temperature (i.e. 240°F – 270°F) in the absence of steam.
Workmanship. The indicator shall be free from defects which detract from its appearance or impair its serviceability.
