ENVELOPE, STERILIZATION
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description covers a self-sealing, paper and plastic, sterilization envelope with steam and gas sterilization indicators.
Salient characteristics:
The sterilization envelope shall be a plastic faced and paper backed peel pouch specifically designed for the containment of items during sterilization, and aseptic handling following sterilization. The envelope shall be supplied in the following approximate sizes:
Size 1 – 3-1/2 inches by 8 inches (8.9 cm by 20.3 cm)
Size 2 – 3-1/2 inches by 22 inches (8.9 cm by 55.9 cm)
The sides and top of the sterilization envelope shall have a permanent wide seal which will remain intact before, during, and after ethylene oxide or steam sterilization. The bottom of the envelope shall have a wide self seal flap which will remain intact during ethylene oxide or steam sterilization. The adhesive used for closure of the bottom flap shall be suitable for the purpose and capable of adhering only to the envelope surfaces intended.
Both the paper and plastic surfaces of the sterilization envelope shall be sufficiently permeable to permit contents to be sterilized via steam and ethylene oxide, and sufficiently impermeable after sterilization so that contamination from the atmosphere shall not enter a closed envelope.
Both surfaces of the sterilization envelope shall be strong enough to minimize wrapper perforation. The plastic surface shall be clear for easy product identification.
Each sterilization envelope shall include indicators which shall provide visual indication that the sterilization process (whether steam or gas) is complete.
