STERILIZER, SURGICAL INSTRUMENT
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description in preference to A-A-0051382 (DM) dated 1 April 1986.
This commercial item description covers a glass bead, dry heat sterilizer suitable for use within the dental operatory for the rapid chairside sterilization of endodontic instruments.
Salient characteristics:
The sterilizing element shall be glass beads or salt. Sufficient glass beads shall be supplied with the sterilizer to completely fill the well in which they are used. The level of beads used during sterilization procedures shall be in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. The glass beads shall be from 0.039 to 0.078 inch in diameter. The interior surface of the well shall be an unbreakable material that will not be corroded by salt, such as Monel 400.
The sterilizer shall be activated by an on-off switch with a light to indicate that power is on. The unit shall operate on 115 volts, 60 Hz, AC. The power cord shall be grounded and a minimum of 5 feet long. A 3-prong plug meeting the requirements of ANSI Standard C73.11 shall be furnished.
The sterilizer shall heat the glass beads of salt to maintain a preset minimum temperature of 454OF or shall automatically cycle between 430OF and 500OF. Temperature shall be indicated on a built-in thermometer graduated up to 500OF or 260OC and shall be measured at any point within a filled well.
Overall outside dimensions of the sterilizer shall not exceed 6-1/2 by 6 by 6-1/2 inches (height by width by depth) with minimum sterilizing well dimensions of 1-1/2 inches diameter by 1-5/8 inches deep. The housing shall be stainless steel or painted steel and shall be sufficiently insulated or shielded such that prolonged touching of any external portion of the heated unit shall not cause pain or skin damage. An anodized on four rubber feet. An extra full supply of glass beads and operating instructions shall be supplied with each sterilizer.
