COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
STRETCHER, AMBULANCE
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description as a replacement for Military Specification MIL-S-36439B which is cancelled.
This Commercial Item Description covers a multi-level ambulance stretcher suitable for use in ambulance and for transferring patients between ambulance and hospital bed.
Salient characteristics:
The ambulance stretcher shall be a multi-level stretcher with a minimum of two levels, low for use in the ambulance and high (hospital bed height) for transfer of patient (see figure 1). The stretcher may have intermediate levels.
The stretcher shall be approximately 22 inches wide by 75 inches long, easily maneuverable, sturdy, and with wheel base and tire tread such that when in the fully raised position, and supporting an adult person, the stretcher will be stable. The stretcher shall be constructed of tubing and forged, or cast, fittings of suitable aluminum alloys or other corrosion-resisting metals, to provide minimum weight with strength and stability.
The stretcher shall consist of the following:
A base frame mounted on casters.
A bed frame having a square head end, adjustable back rest and side rails, and a foot rest, all mounted on the base frame by a suitable mechanism permitting manual raising and lowering of the bed frame, including an automatic locking mechanism for locking the bed frame in the raised position, with a suitable manual release for the automatic locking mechanism so designed to minimize inadvertent release.
