JAR, SURGICAL DRESSING
Corrosion-Resisting Steel
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description as a replacement for Interim Federal Specification RR-J-00131b and Federal Specification RR-j_131a which are cancelled.
This Commercial Item Description covers a corrosion-resisting steel surgical dressing jar and cover designed for use in medical treatment facilities.
Salient characteristics:
The surgical dressing jar shall have a capacity of 4-1/2 quarts plus or minus ½ quarts. The diameter of the jar shall be 6-1/2 inches plus or minus ½ inch. The design of the jar shall facilitate easy cleaning. The jar shall sit evenly on a flat surface without rock or wooble.
The jar and cover shall each be formed seamlessly from one single piece of corrosion-resisting steel, American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) 300 series, with a thickness of not less than 0.025 inch (No. 24, United States Standard gage), which shall not be reduced below 0.018 inch in thickness at any point in the finished jar or cover.
The cover shall fit snugly, but not tightly, over the body, so that the cover may be removed with one hand without the need for holding the jar in the other hand. The cover shall have an AISI series 300 corrosion-resisting steel handle, either square or rounded. Finger clearance shall be adequate. The handle shall be securely welded or spot welded to the cover top. Welding shall be thorough, sound, and free from pits, flashes, and discoloration.
The jar, cover, and handle shall be free of sharp edges, dents, cracks, tears, ripples, or deformities. Jar and cover shall have a commercial No. 4 finish or better.
